Back in the 1920s and 30s, two very different plans emerged for the development of San Antonio's namesake river. One plan recommended paving over the downtown river loop so that it could serve the growing city's storm drain needs. The other envisioned transforming the river into a destination that would prompt businesses to turn their front doors toward it.

Vision triumphed, and today the River Walk is the number one tourist destination in Texas, drawing millions of visitors to San Antonio each year.

Also known as the Paseo del Rio, the River Walk supports a host of activities for tourists and locals alike. With this activity comes yet another threat to the river. E. coli bacteria levels in the river have increased and exceed Surface Water Quality Standards, particularly during and after rain events.

Just as our predecessors prevented the river's ruin last century, we can all help improve and protect the river's water quality today.

There are lots of easy steps we can all take while in the River Walk Watershed that will have a combined positive impact on the river's water quality. These steps, called Best Management Practices (or BMPs for short), were identified by the River Walk Watershed Alliance with input from the River Walk's residents, merchants, restaurants, and visitors.

Our ultimate goal? Sustaining a healthy river, together.

River. Life. Love it.
